Last week, I challenged Emily to start working on the Young Stateswoman Society projects. This is something that I acquired when Maegan was nine, but its something she didn't really have interest in so never finished. Well, trying to motivate Emily to fall in love with learning, I got out this book. What it is, is a binder that is full of goal setting in many different areas, under the names of several important women in history. The women featured are Mother Theresa, Margaret Thatcher, Hannah Hendee, Sacagawea, Abigail Adams, Rosa Parks and Joan of Arc. Under each woman, there are various goals to be set, and it will take several years to accomplish everything if she sticks with it.
Emily chose to do Sacagawea for her first woman of history. She is currently reading a book about her life as a child, and we have a few more on reserve at the library. One of the skills for Sacagawea is sewing. Today she decided to design this little dress out of some scrap fabric I had on hand. She formed it for Sarah, who is her happy recipient. Of course, she didn't follow a pattern and its very "raw", but it was so cute to see her stitching away today---all by hand. She is working on adding pockets and buttons to decorate it up. Another sewing project she's working on is a cross stitch and also a small decorative quilt (those are both projects from her Liberty Girls club)
Sarah is wearing a slip under the dress since the fabric is pretty thin.

My pregnancy and birth video!
I started creating this pregnancy and birth photo montage video back in October. One of the things that was so important to me, was to have the right music to help set the mood and tone for how my pregnancy and birth made me feel. If you were to look back at some of my blog entries from May or June 2008, you would see my photograph with the musician Snatam Kaur. I traveled to three cities in the country to see her and GuruGanesha Singh with the Celebrate Peace tour. GuruGanesha has a very beautiful song called "Ma" that Snatam Kaur sings with him. I felt this was the right song for the video I wanted to create. So, I emailed GuruGanesha himself, to ask his permission to use his song. I was so pleasantly surprised to find that he was absolutely delighted to have his song used for something so personal and special. When I finished the video the other day, I emailed it to him, and again he wrote me back and said how much he loved it and was honored to be a part of it with his music.
I hope all who see my pregnancy and birth video enjoying watching it as much as I enjoyed making it! For me to learn how to make the video in the first place is an accomplishment! :)

My Dad got re-married in October
As mentioned in our family newsletter, my dad was re-married on October 10, 2009. This was just a couple days shy of being 14 months since my mom passed away. It was time! Dad met Sherry online last year (that's the second successful online dating we've had in our family....my sister, Jenny, met her husband, John, online back in 1998 and they are still together and going strong!) Anyway, Dad and Sherry were married and are now enjoying the bliss of being newlyweds and blending two families. Sherry has five children of her own, three girls and two boys (I should say women and men since they are all grown--except for her daughter, Amanda, who is nearly an adult at 17 and still in high school). It is interesting being a part of a step-family. This is the first time in my life to have brothers, though I've only met one of them so far, and have only met two of Sherry's daughters.
Here is a picture of the happy couple, my Dad and Sherry! I'm just glad to see him happy again, and moving on in life after losing my mom so suddenly last year.

Our 2009 Christmas Card & Newsletter
Here is a copy of our 2009 Christmas newsletter and picture card that we sent out to about 70 friends around the globe:
Dear Family and Friends,
Once again, the time of year has come to send out our annual family newsletter. Some people say that newsletters are trite; however, we enjoy them from others every year and hope you will enjoy ours too!
Like most everyone else we know, the economy has affected Jason’s work and income. It is definitely not “business as usual” for him when things are so slow in commercial real estate. However, we feel blessed that there has been enough to make ends meet even though there isn’t an excess. Jason is also still involved in the county search & rescue group, as well as being a range officer at the county firearms shooting range. He was recently called to serve in our ward’s Elder’s Quorum presidency as secretary.
Maegan has grown into a beautiful young lady of 14. She still enjoys playing the piano, although she dislikes doing recitals. In her Commonwealth School she has been studying American History, Math, Science and also participates in the school choir. Her braces came off just this month and she’s so proud of her new smile!
Emily is a sweet girl who is now 10 ½ years old. She also enjoys playing the piano and earlier this year took a hip-hop dance class. In June she got her braces put on and its fun to see how her teeth are straightening out. She is just the best little helper around the house and I appreciate her so much!
Sarah is a spunky girl who is 6 ¾ years old. Earlier this year she was in a tap and ballet class but right now she isn’t in any lessons. However, she does participate in a Liberty Girls club with our home school group and she has a good time with that. (Emily is in this club too) She started loosing teeth this year (three so far), but it’s too early to tell if she’ll need braces like her sisters have! (I suspect she will)
As for me, my life has changed a ton since Wyatt James arrived six weeks ago! We decided to use a midwife this time around, and I experienced the most incredible home birth. It was probably the single most empowering experience of my life!! In June I was called to work in the Mia Maids group with our young Women and I really enjoy that. Last March I also started working with doTerra essential oils...they are great!
The only other real exciting thing to happen this year, is that my Dad got re-married in October to a wonderful lady named Sherry. Although it is bittersweet because it means my mom really is gone, it is good to see my dad happy again and moving on with his life. The kids are enjoying having a doting grandmother again.
We hope you find joy and happiness in Him this holiday season, and may you have a wonderful 2010!

A recent family picture....
Here is a recent family picture of us all, taken on December 13, 2009. My sister in law, Christina Palmer, has recently become a photographer and as a Christmas gift she took our family picture the same day we did our bigger extended family picture. She is also the same one who photographed the girls and Wyatt when he was 8 days old (presently I only have a copy of Maegan and Wyatt's pictures since Christina is still working on the others.)
I am grateful to have a new family picture already that included our new addition!

I am also grateful to have a picture of the entire (current) Griffith/Palmer clan! Its not always easy to get a group of this size together in one place at the same time!

Happy New Year! (Wyatt's birth story included)
Well, here it is 2010 already and I haven't updated anything since Halloween (which was actually the day before I gave birth!) That's right, I had my beautiful baby boy on November 1, 2009. Halloween Day was a pretty typical day, although my low back was really aching, as I recall. I ran several errands at three stores, got the kids ready for Halloween, and made a good dinner. I was doing some frenzied cleaning for some reason...must have been that good old "nesting" mode kicking into high gear!
Jason took the girls trick or treating, but Maegan and I stayed home to answer the door for trick or treaters. Not many people came, which was perfect because it gave me the chance to keep on cleaning! We went to bed that night, and I had fallen asleep for a short time while Jason was reading and watching TV. Once he was ready to go to sleep himself, I shut off my light and got re-adjusted to a more comfortable position. As I was rolling over in bed to do so, I felt a pretty big "gush". I knew that my water had broken. Luckily earlier in the week I'd had the foresight to put down an absorbent pad, because I had a feeling my water would be breaking in my bed!! Its a good thing, too, because it was a ton of water.
I told Jason that my water had just broken and he reacted with, "NO WAY!!!" He had to do a visual to believe me. I went to the toilet so more water could come out and we called the midwife. At that point I wasn't contracting too much, so we didn't see the need for her to come over right away. Within minutes of our first call, more contractions came so we called her back. She came by about midnight or so.
I still wasn't contracting regularly and wasn't in terrible pain, so both Jason and Liz decided to get some rest so they'd have energy for later on. It was great to have a guest bed to put Liz into! During the time they were resting, I was just piddling around the house (quite literally since my water kept on breaking---I am now a firm believer in the use of adult diapers during labor!!) This time was spent on Facebook, pacing the floors and I took a shower so I'd feel as fresh as I could.
Around 3:00 am, my contractions began to come every three minutes or so, and were much more intense. I began to get vocal. What a comfort it was, to be in my own home and feel like I could make as much noise as I wanted to! It was never something I felt comfortable doing when I was giving birth to the girls at the hospital. Being able to make primal noises to ease me through the contractions helped a great deal. Both Jason and Liz heard these noises and came to my rescue.
I don't recall how dilated I was at that point...memory says it was somewhere between 4-5 cm. We called in all my support team at that point. My rule was that no one could attend my home birth unless they themselves had gone through it. Thus, we had no mothers or mothers in law attending this birth, even though they had attended the births of the girls in the hospital. So...we called in three of my awesome friends: Sally Gierisch, Jennifer Morgan and Amanda Hansen. Sally and Jennifer had actually both had home births with the same midwife, and Amanda had had her home birth the year before with an associate midwife who also assisted in my birth. Each of them had a specific role to support me. Sally acted as doula; Jennifer was my massage therapist; and Amanda captured my entire birth as photographer! I LOVED having each of these women with me, in addition to Jason and the midwives. Each of them fit like a piece to my home birth puzzle. If any of them were missing it would have been incomplete.
My intention was to try to have a water birth, or at least to labor in my birth pool that I had ordered. Jason started filling the pool from our hot water tank, and we quickly saw sediment coming out and mucking up the water. Because my water had already broken and we didn't want to risk infection, and also because the baby's heartrate was decelling a bit with contractions, I couldn't use the pool and ended up on the living room floor against the couch instead.
This wasn't my most favorite position to be in, but I trusted Liz that it was the best position to get the baby out quickly and safely. My labor progressed quite rapidly, at least by my standards. It didn't seem that long before I was actually pushing the baby out, which only took a couple of minutes and pushes.
Wyatt James Griffith came into the world at 5:36 am on November 1, 2009. He weighed 7 pounds 1 ounce and was 18 1/2 inches in length. A perfect BEAUTIFUL little boy, with a head full of dark hair. He was welcomed by his parents, all three of his big sisters, in addition to the midwives and my dear friends who came to support me. It hadn't exactly been our intention to the the girls attend the birth at all, but since it worked out that way, I am actually glad they all had that experience. Emily was so happy to call out the time of his birth and was the one to make the phone calls to our family and friends.
Having had my first ever home (natural) birth, I can honestly say that it wasn't as painful as I thought it would be. Of course it was intense pain, but in my mind I had something completely different imagined. It was probably the single most empowering experience of my entire life and is something I will never regret doing. In fact, if I could go back in time and re-do my other three births, I would have chosen to have them at home too.
Wyatt has brought so much happiness and joy into our home and family in the short two months that he's been with us! I am thrilled to be able to nurse him exclusively, since I didn't know if I could at all since I had a breast reduction surgery in 2006. We truly have been blessed and know that he was always supposed to come to our family.
